About Dr. Thomas F. Scotton

Who Are You?

These days, a personalized brand is KEY to a successful business, and communicating that brand to the world is crucial. Branding is what your customer sees before they know who you are. It’s the bright color, kooky graphic, or clever tagline that catches their eye and draws them to you.

A brand is more than just a logo, it’s the aesthetic that makes your target customer either keep scrolling or stop and take a second look.

This can all seem a bit overwhelming, especially if you don’t have any experience with design or marketing. But don’t fret! Luckily, you have the Internet at your fingertips and millions of businesses to draw inspiration from. Please note that this does not mean that you should copy another businesses brand from head to toe (that would be illegal), but it is totally okay to borrow small ideas from many different businesses that you like and admire.

Set the intention of being more aware of the designs and fonts that surround you -- trust me, there are thousands. Take note (or pictures) of the things you see that you feel would fit your brand: colors, fonts, photos, graphics, even the type of people you picture using your product or service, THEY are your inspiration.

Not sure where to start? That’s okay.

Have you already identified who your target audience is? Go back to your notes on that, and dive deeper into the type of content they’re consuming. Are they 20-35 year old women, wearing athletic wear, and drinking slimming teas? Or are they wearing trendy sandals and sipping on Kombucha? Do they spend hundreds of dollars each month getting their hair highlighted, or do they prefer to go au natural? These may seem like strange questions to be asking, but they can tell you a lot about your audience, and in turn, how to attract them.

Do some DIY market research and study what kinds of content these people are sharing on their Instagram pages, or what brands they’re wearing, posing with, or tweeting about. Then do some surface-level research. The more you understand what they’re already attracted to, the more you can create content that they’ll feel comfortable with.
